Making a Difference: St. Alfred’s Supports Education and Families in Jamaica

The generosity of parishioners at St. Alfred’s Episcopal Church is demonstrating their commitment to making a tangible difference in the world. This year, the focus of their ministry has been supporting the Albion Mountain Primary School and Albion Mountain Basic School in Jamaica, and the results have been truly inspiring.

St. Alfred’s raised enough funds to provide scholarships for 40 students for the upcoming academic year. These scholarships cover essential expenses such as tuition, uniforms, and books, ensuring that each student has the resources they need to thrive. In addition, the donations will provide instructional materials for six teachers and have made it possible to hire a teaching assistant for the younger children for the 2024-25 school year.

But the support doesn’t stop there. Once plans are finalized, St. Alfred’s contributions will also go towards enhancing the school environment, with funds earmarked for a new playground or playground fencing to provide a safe and fun space for children to learn and play.

This ministry wouldn’t be possible without the leadership of Fr. William Shiflet, whose guidance has been instrumental, and the dedication of parishioners like Dr. Al Kunkel. Earlier this year, Dr. Kunkel traveled to Jamaica with other medical professionals to provide medical care to families of the Albion Mountain Primary School, reflecting the love and compassion at the heart of St. Alfred’s mission.

Last year, parishioners supported 45 students at Albion, covering uniforms, books, and even providing a meal each week. The ongoing commitment to this educational mission continues to transform lives and build brighter futures for children in Jamaica.

Would you like to join this meaningful effort? Forms to contribute to the 2024 Jamaican Educational Mission are available at St. Alfred’s church services or through the church office. A full sponsorship is $300, but any donation is welcome and appreciated. For more information, please contact Fr. Bill Shiflet.
