What do accounting, cemetery records, D&D and international law have in common? They’re all part of Shen Miller’s summer! As The Smith Center’s first summer intern, Shen has had a behind-the-scenes look at the many moving parts of the Diocese while gaining experience that’s helping shape their future.
Shen was interested in working with the Diocese after hearing that Canon Mike Booher was an exceptional teacher with extensive business experience.
What followed has been a summer filled with a variety of projects: from assisting with accounting and contributions for several churches and DaySpring to digitizing office records, organizing cemetery documentation, researching property records and helping with the Diocese’s property insurance transition.
Among all those experiences, Shen says their biggest takeaway has been discovering how much they enjoy working in the nonprofit sector. They’ve also gained experience in accounting, historical research, working with vendors and contractors, and strengthened their leadership and organizational skills along the way.
Outside the office, Shen stays active with rock climbing, hiking, swimming, longboarding and trips to the gym. Shen is also an avid reader, enjoys video and board games, Dungeons & Dragons, movies and shows, and recently took up gardening. Shen also loves to travel and hopes to see as much of the world as possible, experiencing different places and cultures.
That passion for the wider world is already shaping what comes next. Shen is working toward a degree in Global Business Management at the University of South Florida and hopes to attend law school in Spain before pursuing a career in international law. Their long-term goal is to work with the International Criminal Court or the United Nations.
We’re grateful Shen spent the summer with us, and we can’t wait to see where their journey takes them next!
